Z sierpem w ręku witaj sierpień

Ósmy miesiąc w roku to na wsi pora wytężonej pracy – żniwa. Pierwszy sierpnia zwany był kiedyś dniem Palikopy. Wtedy zwykle zaczynała się pora nawałnych burz, które często kończyły się uderzeniem gromów w stojące już na polach kopy zboża, stąd porzekadło: „Na świętego Palikopy grom popali kopy”. Ciekawe było przekonanie, że kto by 1 sierpnia żął na swoim polu a nie sąsiada, to by mu piorun spalił zboże. Do św. Dominika i Prokopa (4.08.) zboże powinno być już zżęte i czekać w kopkach na zwiezienie z pola: „Na świętego Prokopa szykuj plecy do snopa”. Żniwa trwały zależnie od regionu i pogody do Matki Boskiej Zielnej (15.08.) lub trochę dłużej. Na Mazowszu mawiano: „Na Wniebowzięcie pokończone żęcie”. W regionach północnych termin ten nieco się przesuwał: „Do Wniebowzięcia połowę żęcia”. W najgorszym przypadku starano się wszystkie zboża zebrać do św. Bartłomieja (24.08.), który rozpoczynał już nowy rok gospodarski w polu: orkę i zasiewy ozimin. Zaczynały się także odloty bocianów: „Na Bartłomieja Apostoła bocian do drogi dzieci woła”. Dni „między Matkami”, czyli od 15 sierpnia do 8 września (Matki Boskiej Siewnej) to czas, gdy lato zwolna przechodzi już ku jesieni, a przejście to zapowiadają właśnie burze z piorunami. Z każdym dniem ubywa już ciepła i słońca.
Współczesna nazwa miesiąca pochodzi od używanego dawniej przy żniwach sierpa. W języku polskim istniała jeszcze jedna nazwa: stojączka. Słowo to obrazuje stan przyrody, która osiągnąwszy w tym czasie pełnię rozkwitu na chwilę jakby się zatrzymała. Jednak większość ludów Europy przejęła łacińską nazwę Augustus nadaną na cześć cesarza Oktawiana Augusta.
Na zakończenie przytoczmy ludową zagadkę: Krzywy, błyszczący; ostry i mały, pole obleci taki zuchwały. I cóż to jest?
