Wspomnienie o etnografie

Lucjan Turkowski (1905-1976) urodził się w Lidzie, w ówczesnym województwie nowogródzkim. W czasie studiów w Wilnie, jak i po magisterium w 1934 roku, uczestniczył w pracach Zakładu Etnografii USB, którym kierowała Jego mistrzyni uniwersytecka i promotorka, profesor Cezaria Baudouin de Courtenay-Ehrenkreutzowa. Były to przede wszystkim badania terenowe Wileńszczyzny, Nowogródczyzny oraz Polesia i Wołynia. Na tych terenach Turkowski zbierał materiały do „Atlasu kultury ludowej w Polsce” (wydanego w Krakowie przez profesora Kazimierza Moszyńskiego), gromadził eksponaty dla muzeów uniwersyteckich w Wilnie i Warszawie, a także dla Towarzystwa Ochrony Sztuki Ludowej; nadzorował działalność ośrodków twórczości ludowej pozostających pod opieką tego Towarzystwa.
Szczególne zainteresowania tkactwem i garncarstwem zaowocowały pracą magisterską i doktorską w tych dziedzinach oraz artykułami dotyczącymi wytwórczości rzemieślniczej na Wileńszczyźnie i przemysłu ludowego na Polesiu.
W 1935 roku przeniósł się do Warszawy. W Katedrze Etnografii Polski Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, kontynuował seminarium doktoranckie oraz pracował w Muzeum Narodowym, w którym przygotował wystawę strojów ludowych.
W 1939 roku Turkowski powrócił do Wilna. W 1941 roku został aresztowany i zesłany do Uzbekistanu. W roku 1942 przedostał się do Armii Polskiej gen. Władysława Andersa i, jako redaktor wydawnictw wojskowych, przez cztery lata pracował w Palestynie. W tym czasie zdołał także przeprowadzić badania terenowe i zebrać materiały etnograficzne dotyczące kultury rolniczej mieszkańców Gór Judzkich. Część z nich opublikował po wojnie.
W 1947 roku przybył do Anglii i po demobilizacji osiadł w Londynie. Pracę zarobkową, fizyczną, a później biurową, łączył z aktywnością naukową jako członek Polskiego Towarzystwa Naukowego na Obczyźnie oraz – po zatwierdzeniu doktoratu w roku 1960 i habilitacji w 1964 roku – profesor Polskiego Uniwersytetu na Obczyźnie.
Zmarł nagle 2 stycznia 1976 roku w Londynie.
Grono przyjaciół, mając w pamięci Jego słowa o tymczasowości pobytu zagranicą, podjęło starania o pochówek w Polsce. Wybór padł na Toruń, gdzie zamieszkało, mające za sobą typową dla Polaków ze Wschodu repatriacyjną drogę, rodzeństwo badacza.
Prochy Lucjana Turkowskiego 21 sierpnia 1976 roku spoczęły na Cmentarzu św. Jerzego.
Muzeum Etnograficzne w Toruniu zamierza opublikować w swojej serii wydawniczej „Etnografia ocalona” pracę Lucjana Turkowskiego „Kultura rolnicza fellachów w Palestynie”.
